FINDING A CURE: RESEARCH HAS STALLED

It has been suggested that up to 1% of the world population carries the mutations that produce the disorder. That amounts to over 67 million people who could be helped by a cure.

Despite the large numbers effected, TMAU has never had any support from government or private agencies as far as funding for research into treatments or a cure is concerned.

Moreover, it is extremely difficult to organise proper testing for the disorder. Whilst science has discovered what causes the disorder, research on treatments or a cure has stalled.

"Low Choline Diet": The Only Current Treatment Option
The only so-called treatment available is a highly restrictive diet (called a low choline diet) that unfortunately only brings limited relief to a limited number of sufferers and which is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to follow. Choline is an essential nutrient without which we cannot live and avoiding it completely is practically impossible because it is ubiquitous, being found to a certain extent in nearly all foods. Restriction of choline may also be unhealthy, as it is necessary for proper brain function and other uses.
